Dohyô
Towards 1880
This term designates the sumo combat zone. This sacred area, with a diameter of 4.55 metres, is forbidden to females. Sumo wrestling is characterised by the build of the wrestlers, it is also remarkable due to the numerous rites which surround the fighting. So, before starting a fight the combatants carry out rituals intended to chase away spirits: they stamp on the ground with their feet and throw handfuls of salt.
