About this photograph :
Manhattan View
Since the end of the 19th century, skyscrapers have been a symbol of the visual identity of New York. They are mainly situated on Manhattan Island. Numerous buildings on the island form the unmistakable ‘Manhattan skyline.’ It consists literally of the line of the horizon formed by the skyscrapers. Through their height and shape, many of these buildings are easily identifiable. ‘Manhattan View’ depicts downtown Manhattan. Taken from Liberty Island where, as indicated by its name, the Statue of Liberty is situated, it shows a foggy Manhattan. The intrusion of tree leaves in the field of vision underlines the contrast between urbanisation and nature.
