About this photograph :
Downtown
Since the end of the 19th century, skyscrapers have been a symbol of the visual identity of New York. They are mainly situated on Manhattan Island. Nina Papiorek proposes bird’s eye shots of Manhattan. From the top of the Empire State building, the artist photographs Manhattan from the sky. Beyond architectural elements such as the easily recognisable sky-scrapers, the photographer tries to immortalise the urban congestion proper to New York. The photographs are constructed around lines which meet: the vertical lines of the buildings and the horizon, as well as the busy streets which divide New York City into squares. These lines converge towards a unique vanishing point. This dense grid, put into perspective, contributes to creating the impression of frenzy resulting from the activity of this metropolis.
